The Waite Family at the Homestead, Hubbardston, Mass.

This is one of my favorite photos from the Waite archive because it shows members of the extended family at home. I'm imagining that this is a Sunday afternoon in the spring, perhaps just after a big Sunday dinner. It certainly captures a time and place in the old New England, perhaps sometime around 1915 or so?

In any case, I've uploaded a high-resolution image so that if you click on the photo you'll see a larger size with a fair amount of detail.

Cany any one identify the location of this photo in Hubbardston? I'm told, however, that the house is long gone.

By the way, the young man sitting directly behind the dog looks a lot like your trusty author. The fact that he's sitting next to Carrie (to his right), my grandmother (who looks a lot like my mom), well, that just makes the whole scene a bit more interesting in a visual sense for me.

Meantime, here's the information that's written on the reverse side of the photo:

The Waite Homestead, Hubbardston, MA
Carrie [Aldrich] and Sidney Waite sitting in front of their dog
Luella Waite (later Wead) to the left of them
In the back are:
Half sisters, Anna Waite (born 1847, married John Rice, 1870) and
Mary Persis (born 1850, married John Holden 1868); their mother: Persis (not in the picture)
Persis Waite of Barre, married Arron Waite 1842. She died 1874
Half brother, Edward, born 1851 (in the back row)
Young boy, son of either Anna or Mary
Aaron Waite is the man with the beard, father of Sidney Waite

  1. Hello jpicerno aka cousin :) I LOVE these pictures that you have posted, just absolutely amazing, I haven't seen most of these. So according to the information, I would assume this picture was taken closer to 1900, Carrie & Sidney were married in the spring of 1899 and had a baby in fall of 1899 and 1900. Also, Aaron Waite passed away in February 1902.

The little boy is a confusion to me. Anna and Mary's boys were born in the 1870s, so they would be late teens when this photo was taken. There are 3 possible boys, Luella's son Raymond (1899) or Sidney & Carrie's son Sidney (1899) or Everett (1900).

    2. I just inherited a stack of family photos and this photo happened to be in the group WITH names on the back. Unfortunately I do not know who wrote the notes on the back. But this picture claims that the woman on the left is not Luella Weed but a Mrs Locke, a neighbor)

Secondly, it names the little boy as Carl Rice son of Fred and Anna Rice. I do see a Carl Rice born 1896, his father was Fred, but FamilySearch lists Edith as the mother. Anna Rice in the picture would be little Carl's grandmother.

Its sad that Carl's parents weren't in the picture, because then the picture would have 4 generations. Oh well. Take what we can get ;)

    3. Thanks for the update, Denise. That's a great find, and a conflict with the names written on the back of the photo version I have. Hmmm... a bit of a mystery. I guess the next step might be to find a photo of Luella when she was young and see if it confirms the names you have. In any case, if you have any more Waite photos perhaps you might consider sending digital versions of some for posting on the blog. Cheers!

  2. An anonymous family source reports:

Thanks for posting the picture of Frank and Frederick Aldrich. Not sure where that was taken, but as far as determining the year, Frederick was born in North Rutland, MA, in1898 and died in 1916, only 18 years old. Frank Aldrich was born in 1847 and died in 1921. Would you guess
Frederick's age in that picture to be about 14, or so? Maybe that would give the date of the picture to be something like 1912.....just a guess. Maybe after a few weeks, someone in the family will view the picture and have more information.

To complete your question re the Waite Homestead, it was located on Healdville Road.

  3. I bet I can figure this out for you. How are you related to the Wead family? My great grandfather is Raymond Wead, Sr.
